The Door to Hell is a crater in the middle of the Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan. The fires in the crater burn unceasingly, and can be seen from miles away. The pit also gives off a strong smell of sulphur.
The huge hole, measuring about 70 meters (230ft) in diameter, was created in 1971, when a gas drilling rig and its camp collapsed into the ground. Fearing the escape of the wealth of natural gases may be poisonous, it was decided that they be burnt off – a process that was anticipated to last a few days at most. Amazingly 41 years later the fires still blazes continuously.
